Chinnor kicked off, facing in to the sun and immediately applied strong pressure to the visiting team. 10 minutes of hard rucking and good support play, saw a try run in by today’s winner of the ‘Full Back Lottery’ Jack Gibbins. Chris Hopgood was substituted for Reggie Hubbocks, and after more continual pressure from Chinnor, Harry Franklin scored a typically powerful break-away try to stretch Chinnor’s lead.
With the half-time whistle approaching, Amersham began to recover their composure and play with increasing commitment, coming back at Chinnor with increasing pressure and intensity. Excellent scrummaging saw the visitors to within metres and mere moments of scoring; however Chinnor and their increasingly stretched defence were saved by the referee’s half-time whistle.
Amersham started the second half as they had finished the first, not allowing Chinnor any space and putting demands on Chinnor’s defence. The increasing deadlock was finally broken by another Jack Gibbins try, which was converted by Toby Butler, bringing the score to 17-0. Substitutions of Finn (off) Adam Pipkin (on).
Regaining their composure and rediscovering their earlier dominance Chinnor began to demonstrate their developing brand of flowing rugby - good handling and excellent support play resulted in a well finished try for the fleet-footed Seb Scott. Followed immediately from the re-start by another try. A good catch and stunning run by Ben Macintosh was completed with a good off-load to Ben Aston and pass on to Toby Butler, who easily ran in to touch down a try only a minute after the previous one.
With Amersham starting to wilt slightly under the Chinnor onslaught and the increasingly warm sun, Chinnor sought to increase the pressure further with another good run by the resurgent Seb Scott on the wing, resulting in his second try of the match, (32-0).
Showing their class and never-say-die attitude, Amersham raised their heads and their game. Once again the Amersham boys came back with renewed vigour and determination and were rewarded with a well-deserved try, unfortunately not converted. Substitutions - Reggie (off) Jake O’Neil (on) and Ben Marsh (on) Seb Scott (off).
Un-daunted, Chinnor carried on with their good play, with Harry Franklin scoring another fine try, converted by Toby, (39-5). Determined to the end, Amersham made a last-ditch attempt on Chinnor line, really testing Chinnor’s defence, which despite valiant efforts, eventually gave way to Amersham’s determination to leave the spectators with a demonstration of their pride and class. Try to Amersham. Final score 39-10.
Well played Chinnor, who fought off a good opposition with simple, well thought out play.
