Clearly the launch of Mr Murdoch’s new rag was to have spin off benefits for the hardy spectators. Sadly, with the Sun's rugby correspondent otherwise engaged, the slowest moving parents were cornered and 'persuaded' to record the day's events.
After a somewhat desultory warm up – mainly involving the removal of unwanted thermal layers, Chinnor's mixed 'A Team' greeted their opponents from Wycombe with a warmth befitting the prevailing meteorological conditions. Unusually the warmth of this greeting seemed to extend to pulling in the first three scrums rather than pushing!
With the snooze button finally turned off by words of wisdom from Coach Butler, Chinnor decided to see if pushing might produce better results. Sure enough, at the next scrum, having forcefully driven back Wycombe, Matt Smith picked up and in typically muscular style powered over from 10 yards out. Toby stepped up to claim the additional 2 points. Chinnor under way, 7-0.
From the restart Chinnor turned on their more usual brand of dominant rugby and put Wycombe under considerable pressure, however some habits prove harder to shift than others, and the resulting flowing move of strong rucking and fluid movement was halted by poor handling as a try looked inevitable. Setting up camp in and around Wycombe’s 22 for the following 10 minutes saw Wycombe’s stout defence finally broken down with the ever more impressive Rory Leff delivering Chinnor’s second (unconverted) try. 12-0.
As the first half drew to a close, Wycombe finally broke the Chinnor strangle-hold and launched their first major offensive into the Chinnor half. The early promise of this attack was brilliantly snuffed out by the excellence of Harry S at full back. Turning defence into attack with customary style (and some round ball skills) Harry ran, kicked and dribbled the ball back through Wycombe’s startled defence to within 5 meters of the Wycombe line where a last ditch desperate defence saw out the first half.
The second half saw a clearly reinvigorated Wycombe start where they had left off. Wycombe attacks were stoutly resisted by a hard working Chinnor defence with more top class work by Harry S.
The pressure from Wycombe was starting to fray a few nerves and after Wycombe’s scrum half decided to introduce himself to Toby by seeing how well he could bounce off the all too solid Chinnor kicker at a 22 drop out, the players reunited further up the pitch with handbags out and a late tackle by Toby was justifiably punished with a yellow card. From the resulting penalty Wycombe took advantage of the extra man and the unravelling Chinnor defence to run in their first try. 12-5. Sadly, whilst watching the Wycombe conversion attempt go wide, Chinnor chose this moment to try out their (clearly) rudimentary oratorical skills on the referee. Which quite rightly lead to a Wycombe penalty from the kick off.
Reminders from the touch-line that if Chinnor wanted to talk they should join a debating society (or play football) should surely not now be necessary. Treating the referee and our opponents with the respect they deserve is the Chinnor style so lets stick to it!
For the remainder of Toby’s enforced spell of daisy picking behind Wycombe’s posts, Chinnor got their heads down, re-grouped and solidly resisted Wycombe’s sustained attacks. With the frustration transferring to Wycombe, their efforts at advising the referee were also, justifiably, punished with a penalty. Toby returned to the pitch (complete with daisy chain) in time to convert the resulting kick at goal. 15-5.
With the game now see-sawing between the two teams as they sought to establish dominance, Wycombe took advantage and advanced up the pitch courtesy of a series of Chinnor infringements and the resulting free kicks and finished off the move with their second unconverted try. 15-10.
Finally awakening from a spell of introspection (and possibly reminded of a previous period of sleep complete with a Banbury comeback nightmare), Chinnor rampaged back at Wycombe from the restart. Superb rucking lead to the try of the game as Nathaniel finished off the resulting powerful play at his high-speed eel-like best. 20-10.
Maintaining their tempo for the remaining minutes of the game Chinnor were rewarded with a penalty and the spectacle of a fantastic Toby kick from the touchline to wrap up the game in blazing sunshine at 22-10.
All in all a rewarding spectacle for the now thoroughly de-frosted spectators basking in the un-seasonal (& un-Chinnor like) warmth of a February Sunday.
