Compared to recent weekends this morning’s weather was almost tropical as Chinnor U15s took on a well-drilled High Wycombe team at Kingsey Rd.
The match was played in 20 minute “thirds” to allow High Wycombe to rotate their squad of 22 and for Chinnor’s squad of 15 to get their breath back!
In the opening 10 minutes Chinnor managed to dominate possession working through the phases and recycling well. However, High Wycombe won quick possession and moved the ball efficiently to put their winger in in the corner. 0-5.
As the game progressed Chinnor managed to build some momentum and forced a lineout 10m from the Wycombe line. With the lineout functioning well Chinnor were able to form the catch and drive, drawing in the defenders, which allowed hooker, Rhys N, to break off on the blind side and cross untouched and with the presence of mind to get as close to the posts as possible. Conversion successful by Reuben S. 7-5.
At the close of the first period High Wycombe piled on the pressure and eventually crossed the line in the last play and added the conversion. 7-12.
Swapping ends for the next “third” and now playing into a strengthening wind Chinnor battled well but were unable to stop High Wycombe crossing for a further 2 unconverted tries. 7-22.
The final “third” was hugely competitive with both sides creating chances that were snuffed out by great defensive efforts. Towards the end Chinnor did manage to mount a sustained break which culminated in Connor G crossing for an unconverted try.
The match finished 12-22 and the performances were a credit to both teams. Well done to High Wycombe for securing the win and well done to our lads for a top effort that never faltered in its determination. Special mention to Chinnor’s Joseph Mc whose tackling was a dominant feature throughout.
That’s our last game of 2021. Our next match is away at Drifters on 9th January.
