Heartbreak for U15s at Oxford Harlequins

Scant reward for superb effort.

On another day we will play much worse and win, but in sport you don't always get what you deserve, and today was one of those days. That said, all of boys can take heart and pride in having played in a wonderful game of rugby, far more entertaining and impassioned than the dross served up by the national team yesterday.

Every ball was fiercely contested from the first whistle. Quins were clearly up for the game and had the territorial advantage in the opening moments but the Chinnor forwards kept the ball away from the danger areas and put some ferocious tackles in, a pace they kept up throughout the game. Gradually through the half Chinnor contained their opponents and gained the upper hand and were eventually rewarded with a great team try. Strong running from Ollie Wingfield, a nice interchange with Lewis Cook and great support work by a number of other players saw Lewis Aitken dive over for his first try of the season. The conversion struck the upright, but Chinnor went in at half time with a 0-5 advantage. This advantage was to stay intact for most of the second half. Quins pushed hard, but the Chinnor defence held firm. However, when the pressure was relieved and the ball cleared upfield we were unable to increase the advantage on the scoreboard and the pressure came back on. After one such clearance Quins were finally able to break the Chinnor line and a missed tackle enabled them to score in the corner and follow up with a superbly struck conversion.

As Chinnor pushed hard in the closing moments Quins managed to run in a couple of fortunate interception tries to run up a final score of 21-5. This flattered them, and was harsh on the Chinnor forwards, in particular, who had worked and tackled themselves into the ground. But that's the way it goes sometimes. However, the Chinnor boys held their heads high at the end of the game, and can be proud of their restraint in the face of intense provocation from some of their opponents. Well done lads for keeping your cool and your discipline, and a thank you to the referee for handling the match in a calm and controlled way

I do have to report, however, a moment of madness from a spectator in a silly hat entering the field of play. Yes, you know who you are!!!!
