THE Rugby Football Union has announced the 2020/21 league fixtures for levels 3-12 of the adult male game.
While dates have been allocated to the first window of games, they are only provisional and an official date is yet to be announced.
It is important to note that we still remain at Stage B of the RFU’s six phase ‘Return to Community Rugby Roadmap’ for the time being.
An RFU statement reads: “Further updates will be provided when the government gives the green light that it is safe for community rugby to restart. Most leagues have been split in two based on geography, the others elected not to be split. The season has been divided into three windows. In the first window clubs will play each team in their group, home and away. Provisional dates have been allocated to these games. If rugby has not started by these dates, each week will be automatically moved to the end of the first window.”
Although we must continue to wait on confirmation of dates, we can reveal the fixtures for our First XV, Wildboys and Wildboys 2.0.
In National League 1, the RFU are working on the basis that at least 15 games can be completed through the following windows.
Window 1 (by October 3) – A full regular season of home and away fixtures will be delivered.
Window 2 (by November 28) – A full round of home or away fixtures will be delivered (15 fixtures). At this point the league will be separated into two groups of eight teams in the top eight league positions go into one group and the next eight teams go into another group. From here, teams play each other home OR away in their group, thus a further seven fixtures (22 fixtures in total).
Window 3 (by January 30, 2021) – A full round of home or away fixtures will be delivered (15 fixtures) – the league winner would be decided by the results of these fixtures.
For the Wildboys and Wildboys 2.0, who play in Berks, Bucks & Oxon Divisions 1 and 3 North respectively, it will be a little different.
Their leagues have been split in two, with ten rounds of home and away group games.
If Window 1 is successfully completed on time, teams will move to the second, competing against clubs from the other group once – either home OR away. If there is still time for Window 3, they will then play the reverse fixtures.
The RFU has also noted the following considerations:
• Dates for windows 2 & 3 will be allocated once competitions are able to start.
• No decision has yet been made about RFU Cup competitions.
• If only the first window is possible, a playoff between the leaders of the two groups will be staged to decide the league winner.
• The fixtures will not be placed on GMS, and thus filter through to club websites, until a start date is confirmed.
• No decision has been made on the effect of this season on promotion/relegation for the 2021-22 season.
