Chinnor secure bonus-point victory over Bridgwater & Albion

We have delved back into our archives to bring you a new regular feature – On This Day

2009

CHINNOR recorded a bonus-point victory with a 29-3 success at home to Bridgwater & Albion in National 3 South.

We opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a fine try as Pip Seymour tipped back a superb cross-field kick from Ben Hewitt for Trevor Powell to collect and touch down – Hewitt converting.

Bridgwater replied with a penalty as our lead was cut to 7-3 at the break.

Chinnor upped the pace in the second half, though, and when Toby Prescott was stopped just five metres out, Bertie Payne scooped the ball up from the breakdown to cross, Hewitt adding the extras.

Arthur Ellis then unfortunately lost control of the ball as he was about to score try No 3, but the referee called play back for no advantage from an offside and a Hewitt penalty extended our lead to 17-3.

Chinnor then made it 17 unanswered points in ten second half minutes when Peter Wright dived over – Hewitt again converting.

Defence was then the order of the day as Bridgwater’s powerful scrum provided a stern test, but we secured the bonus point late on when Chris Mahoney skipped between two defenders to touch down.

There were plenty of smiles in the Clubhouse afterwards as Walter McGuicken witnessed a home victory on his birthday!
