Chinnor welcome high flying Coventry to Kingsey Road

Chinnor welcome Championship heavyweights Coventry to Kingsey Road on Saturday. It will be the first time the famous club have played at Chinnor and with a bumper crowd expected it’s due to be another huge occasion. After finishing a highly credible 3rd last season Coventry are riding high in the league once more. They started the year in blistering form and just before Christmas it was looking like they were going to give Ealing a real run for their money for League honours. A blip in results following several injuries dented their title aspirations but a credible Premiership Cup campaign and a few more league wins mean they will be coming to Chinnor in confident and positive mood and looking to cement a top 3 position again.
Coventry rightly boasts a storied 150-year history with a back catalogue of John Player Cup wins, huge success against the biggest names in Welsh and English Club Rugby and a plethora of former Internationals many of whom are among the most famous names in English Rugby. David Duckham , Fran Cotton and Peter Jackson all legendary names who played for Coventry, England and the British Lions. Peter Rossborough was an England International, played over 300 games for Coventry and we will be delighted to welcome him to Chinnor tomorrow in his role as Coventry President.
In more recent times Danny Grewcock and Rob Hardwick have represented Coventry and England, family pride is on the line on Saturday with Robin Harwick playing for Chinnor against his Dad’s old team. Tom Johnson was a standout performer for Chinnor, in a scintillating young backrow that included Dave Seymour and Paul Hennessy , before moving to Coventry, Chiefs and England. We will also welcome former Chinnor Captain James Tyas who is the 2nd row tomorrow and scrum half Josh Barton who represented Chinnor for a season.
Coventry won the reverse fixture in October 28-14 in a fiercely contested encounter. It was a super game to watch in front of a large partisan crowd. Hopefully we will repay the compliment on Saturday. Former England backrower Matt Kvesic was a standout performer that day but is unavailable due to injury, but the full timers have real depth and quality in their squad and have added a few recently from Bath and Edinburgh.
A warm welcome to Jon Sharp and his Board who have been so welcoming and accommodating to Chinnor this season. His passion and commitment to Coventry and Championship Rugby is exemplary and deserves so much better from the RFU.
Please make sure you bring the noise and passion to Kingsey Road and roar on the boys, that 16th man makes all the difference.
