Chinnor welcome visitors Bedford Blues for the first ever fixture between the two clubs. The last Saturday home match before Christmas is traditionally a huge fixture at Kingsey Road and with a large contingent of travelling supporters expected we are looking forward to an exhilarating match day atmosphere.
Bedford are a stalwart of the upper echelons of the Championship. Boasting the biggest support in the league they have gained a reputation under long serving Director of Rugby Mike Rayer of playing an open and expansive brand of Rugby. Their playing ranks are also boosted by a very close relationship with Northampton Saints which gives them the opportunity to enhance the quality of the squad but crucially without diluting their club ethos. On Saturday 4 Saints feature, two at half back, impressive Oxfordshire raised Fyn Brown in the backrow and Nonleh as a replacement prop. Former Saint Joel Matavesi, who joined Bedford permanently this year, is a very powerful presence in midfield alongside their dangerous Captain Michael Le Bourgeois. Dean Adamson on the wing is a proven and prolific try scorer.
We welcome a couple of returning, very popular characters in Bedford's ranks. Freddie Tuilagi enjoyed a superb season for Chinnor a few years ago. A hugely powerful ball carrier he was a real asset in our pack and a friendly presence around the club before leaving to play in France. Tom Cruse was a fantastic addition to our coaching team last season and he played a crucial role as we powered to National One winners. Always friendly and engaging we look forward to sharing a Christmas beer after the game.
Bedford are enjoying another successful season so far, having won 6 of their first 8 games, they sit in 3rd place just 6 points off top spot. Since losing to Coventry in week 2 their only loss has been a very tight contest with leaders Ealing so they come into Saturday's match full of confidence. Their fighting spirit was also on show last week as they came back from a big deficit to pip London Scottish with the last kick of the match.
We really hope to see a huge, vociferous home support continue to back the boys who fully appreciate the cheers and roars. More noise and passion will be needed to out support the Bedford faithful.
