Chinnor will host Ampthill for the first time since they clashed in National League 2 in March 2014. A pulsating game that ended in a 31-34 home defeat but 2 losing bonus points proved crucial in Chinnor's fight against relegation that season. It will be the first return fixture of this season after Chinnor lost another dramatic game in September at Ampthill 31-29. With this history of high scoring, thrilling matches Saturday's clash promises to be another blockbuster.
The Mob have a deserved reputation of playing a free flowing attack focused game under the expert tutelage of Paul Turner. Their expansive game plan is masterminded by the dangerous Josh Barton at 10. The young fly half arrived at Ampthill after a stellar career at Super BUCS Champions Exeter University and a brief spell at Jersey and will launch attacks from any position. His one on one battle with Chinnor's George Worboys will be one to watch. Feeding off Barton's attacks will be powerful centre ex Sydney Rooster Va'enuku. Having signed from Australian Rugby League he has adjusted to winter in the UK and the new code extremely effectively.
Upfront Ampthill are able to call on huge Premiership experience. their 2 props Johnston and Barrington boast over 400 Premiership appearances between them for Saracens, Wasps and Harlequins including a big haul of silverware. From a dominant scrum Ampthill look to launch powerhouse British Army Number 8 Ravuvu into the midfield. Ampthill do benefit from a really strong relationship with Saracens but this weekend their contingent of loan players has been reduced due to International Call ups.
Ampthill have had a slightly disappointing season after such a successful finish to their last campaign. They will take heart from fighting back against Bedford last week in their big derby match and after a couple of big defeats in the Premiership Cup they did extremely well against Bristol Bears. A few close matches that could have gone either way would put a different complexion on their season so far. Traditionally they have improved significantly down the stretch and will be looking to replicate that model again this season.
After Saturday Chinnor will have 10 games left in the League, of which 5 are in May. So a total of five games across February, March and April and just 2 of those at home! The huge crowds and home game atmosphere so far have been a real standout feature of the season. Remarkably Chinnor have the 3rd highest average crowd in the League behind only Coventry and Bedford, The attendance on Friday against Ealing was nearly 20% of Thame's population which is amazing. The whole squad absolutely love the support and the atmosphere it creates, that 16th Man makes such a difference so please keep coming and bring your family and friends to enhance the Chinnor Massive. Put those dates in your diary and be sure to cheer the boys home.
