Chinnor travel to Cambridge for their first historic ever game in the Championship

Chinnor face erstwhile National League rivals Cambridge as they make their Tier 2 debut. Cambridge who are led by former Chinnor favourite Richie Williams were in exactly the same position as Chinnor this time last year having won an extremely exciting National One title race . Indeed our last competitive fixture was 18 months ago at Kingsey Road when a last gasp Grant Hughes special meant Chinnor came away with a losing bonus point to alleviate any lingering relegation threat . Cambridge ran out winners that day 17-19 but Richie thought the lack of a bonus point had scuppered Cambridge’s title push. There would’ve been long odds that the next encounter would be in the Championship.

Cambridge had a real baptism of fire last season as they were thrown straight into the Premiership Cup without any chance of testing the water with Championship Rugby. Undoubtedly it would be a very steep learning curve but the opportunity to play against Premiership teams would have been a great experience for the players, coaches and spectators. Unfortunately this opportunity has been denied to Chinnor and Cambridge this season as they are looked upon by as the unloved stepchildren banished to the cupboard under the stairs.

Although Cambridge finished last in the League last year they gained invaluable experience and insight into what it takes to be a success at this level. It showed in their results as the season wore on they became increasingly competitive, a great credit to Richie and his squad. Cambridge won just 2 games but registered 5 losing bonus points which indicates how close they were to taking a few notable scalps. The Blood and Sand also registered 7 4 try bonus points another reflection of their increasing quality.

Richie has made a fair few notable additions to his playing depth and quality this season in an attempt to build on the lessons from last season. A dozen new recruits many with Championship/Premiership/URC experience show Cambridge have the ambition and funding to improve and will probably be eyeing a mid table finish at the end of the season.
Cambridge are obviously in the same position as us in terms of trying to keep the squad focused after being denied cup games and have large sections of the season fallow.

A disappointing loss to local rivals Bishop’s Stortford in preseason was followed by much more encouraging performances against Cardiff and Aberavon as a more ambitious, adventurous game plan bedded in.

It will certainly be a tough game for Chinnor but the boys will be focused and also looking to improve on preseason outings. With Willie Ryan notching up his century of caps there will be no lack of spirit and endeavour.
